The
Old Boma
A national monument, the Old Boma is a 100 year
old fort located in Mikindani on the side of a hill overlooking
the Indian Ocean, beautifully restored into a comfortable hotel
with up to date facilities, whilst retaining its original features
and charm.
THE
ACCOMMODATION
There are only 6 spacious rooms all furnished with
hand-carved beds, Tinga Tinga paintings and other local handicrafts.
The rooms are kept cool by high ceilings and thick walls, coupled
with ceiling fans. Most rooms have a balcony with a sea or jungle
view.
THE FACILITIES
Hotel facilities include a large swimming pool
surrounded by Frangipani and Flame trees. A pool side bar is available,
with the Old Courthouse providing shaded seating.
THE ACTIVITIES
Diving and snorkelling, cultural visits in Mikindani, fishing, and
visits to nearby marine and wildlife reserves can all be organised
at the hotel.
THE VERDICT
The Boma has been lovingly restored and if it was
in Dar es Salaam or Stone Town would be permanently fully booked.
Unfortunately it is in Mikindani which is a bit off the main tourist
path.
However for those with a sense of curiosity this is one of southern
Tanzania’s most memorable accommodation choices and Mikindani
is a charming typical Swahili coastal fishing village lost in time.
The Boma is also an excellent base for divers with a higher budget.
COST – From $90-$120 p.p. B.B.
