Safaris on the Tanzanian Coast

Tanzania has over 800km of coastline, most of which is completely ignored by the tourist trail. From Tanga in the north to Mtwara in the south there is a huge variety of attractions for the curious traveler.

The Swahili Coast is characterized by the historical towns of Pangani, Bagamoyo, Kilwa, Lindi and Mikindani. The historical ruins of Kilwa are some of the best preserved in southern Africa whilst Bagamoyo still bears testament to the days of slavery.

Pangani

Located 50 km south of Tanga on the north east coast of Tanzania, Pangani offers superb beaches and a variety of activities.

Saadani National Park

Saadani National Park is Tanzania’s only coastal wildlife reserve and the boat safari on the Wami river provides some of the most interesting meetings with hippo in the country! This small Park has recently been upgraded to National Park status and is the closest wildlife reserve to both Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam. Being able to walk with game in the bush then emerge a short while later onto a deserted beach is a somewhat surreal experience.

Dar es Salaam

Dar es Salaam is the commercial capital of Tanzania and is no longer the painful overnight stop between safaris it once was. Fantastic beaches just south of the city and a recent influx of investment make Dar the perfect gateway to southern Tanzania.

Kilwa

Kilwa is criminally under visited mainly due to poor access and accommodation options in the past but finally the infrastructure is starting to appear. At present the easiest way to visit Kilwa is as an excursion from Mafia Island.

Mikindani

The sleepy town of Mikindani provides a real insight into the Swahili Coast life of a typical fishing village.
