Kisampa Camp
A small, rustic camp located in a private wilderness sanctuary bordering the southern end of Saadani National Park.
THE ACCOMMODATION
Just 6 ‘star gazing’ tents, which consist of a bed enclosed by mosquito netting offering unobstructed views of the night sky.
The bucket shower and thunderbox compost toilet is enclosed in a private area next to the tents.
THE FACILITIES
A large open dining and sitting area has lovely views over the undisturbed bush and meals are often served under the stars at night.
THE SAFARIS
Game drives and a boat safari on the Wami river inside Saadani National Park can be organised at the camp but there are several interesting activities in the immediate environment.
Walking safaris around the sanctuary offer a close insight into this unique environment and although game drives are not extremely productive in terms of wildlife sightings, the birdlife is good and the bush has a variety of different ecosystems. Swimming in the Wami river and picnics in the bush make this a great place for children to learn an appreciation of nature.
Kisampa is heavily involved in local community projects and it is perhaps this area which will offer the most interest to visitors seeking something extra from their Tanzanian experience with every stay directly benefiting the communities and visits to the various projects in the area organised by the camp.
THE VERDICT
This is not a big game destination and the camp will definitely not be to everyone’s taste as it is basic and does not have many of the home comforts which other camps may offer. But when you know that the water is carried a long distance up from the river you will appreciate a hot shower even more.
However if you are seeking a different African experience with genuine contact with rural villages and wish to just get back to nature and experience rustic life in a pristine wilderness environment, then Kisampa does offer a pretty unique concept. There are not many tourist operations willing to pursue their social and environmental principles above commercial gain and Kisampa must be commended for this, if you have a couple of spare days then this is an interesting option with easy access by private plane from both Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam.
