MATEMWE BUNGALOWS

Located on the north east coast of Zanzibar this is an intimate lodge perched on top of a coral cliff with dramatic sea views.

THE ACCOMMODATION

Renovated in 2005 to include 6 new suites, which offer a spacious downstairs open plan sleeping and lounge area, en suite bathroom and a breezy verandah with large hammock and comfy cushions. Upstairs is a separate area which can accommodate children or be used as an alternative bed for afternoon rest, and also has a desk for those who cannot leave their work behind.
The 6 original style suites are similar in design downstairs and in the bathroom but do not have the upstairs area.

THE FACILITIES

The large open restaurant overlooks the beach and serves high quality seafood specialities.
There are 2 swimming pools, one infinity pool on the cliff and a larger pool in the gardens which also has a pool side bar. The gardens are beautifully landscaped and attract a variety of birds.
Internet facilities are available but no TV!
The bungalows are located on the cliff edge, which separates 2 stretches of good white sand beach.

THE ACTIVITIES

Diving and snorkelling can be organised at the lodge which is located close to the Mnemba atoll. Sailing cruises by traditional dhow can also be arranged. Matemwe has been involved with local community projects since inception and visits to the local communities are a highlight of the stay here.

THE VERDICT

Stylish accommodation, a relaxed atmosphere, great cuisine and service. 2 good beaches easily accessed from the lodge and a genuine environmental and community awareness make a visit to Matemwe a pleasure for every aspect of your holiday. Highly recommended.
