POLE POLE RESORT
A small and intimate retreat located in Chole Bay
in Mafia Island Marine Park with daily flight connections to Dar
es Salaam and Selous Game Reserve.
THE ACCOMMODATION
Just 7 luxury bungalows all with a large balcony
overlooking the sea. The rooms are spacious and elegantly furnished
with en suite bathroom. Each bungalow is elevated on stilts so catches
the breeze and the private shaded balcony is the perfect place to
relax in the heat of the day.
THE FACILITIES
The main restaurant and bar serves outstanding cuisine with seafood
a speciality. A 5 course dinner should satisfy the most demanding
of appetites. In 2005 a massage and aromatherapy service was introduced.
A small beach at the resort offers private sunbathing and there
is a good swimming beach 5 min walk away.
THE ACTIVITIES
The resort has a fully equipped dive centre offering
PADI and NAUI dive courses and there are a wide variety of good
diving and snorkelling sites in Mafia Island Marine Park. Dives
are conducted from dhows.
Full ($450) and half ($250) day sports fishing trips are organised
from the resort
Several sailing trips by dhow of different duration are offered
to outlying islands and sandbars and shaded picnic areas are set
up on these ‘desert islands’.
A cultural visit to Chole island is also organised from the resort.
Land excursions on Mafia island include trips to the north of the
island and to local markets.
THE VERDICT
The most luxurious option in Mafia with great attention
to detail in the rooms and in the personal service. The food is
superb and the resort maintains a very relaxed atmosphere. The amazing
underwater activities in the marine park mean that every day can
be as full or as lazy as you wish. Although there is no real swimming
beach direct from the resort sailing trips to the sandbars offer
stunning swimming options with total privacy and the main Chole
beach is just 5 min walk away so this is not really an issue. Recommended
choice in Mafia.
