DHOWS – SAILING in DAR ES SALAAM
From March 2006 Dekeza Dhows will
be operating traditional wooden dhow sailing trips from Kipepeo
beach on the south coast of Dar es Salaam. Daily sailing excursions
on board the 28 foot dhow Thamani, which holds up to 12 passengers,
sail to the offshore islands and reefs.

The clear offshore waters around
Sinda island are home to a vast array of colourful starfish, tropical
fish and corals providing excellent snorkelling and pods of dolphins
often accompany the dhow back towards Dar es Salaam.

The dhows are equipped with snorkelling
equipment, life jackets and back up outboard motor for when the
wind dies and are staffed by a professional 3 man crew.
Lunch stops are taken on Sinda island
and non alcoholic drinks are served on board.

Longer trips combining snorkelling
and a cultural tour of Gezalaule village can also be arranged.
Given the choice of sitting in a car in the Dar traffic and enjoying
a regular Dar es Salaam city tour, or spending the day relaxing
on a dhow on the Indian Ocean its worth considering how best to
spend a couple of days in the city!

Trips can be booked in advance or
on arrival at Kipepeo Beach or through Authentic Tanzania. Cost
$25p.p.
