Nyasa – Matema Beach
A 3 hour drive from Tukuyu on an exhilarating road
through the Livingstone Mountains brings you to the fishing village
of Matema on the north east shore of Lake Nyasa.
Matema enjoys a stunning location nestled
at the foot of the Livingstone Mountains, has a great beach and
a lively Saturday pottery market.
This is a lovely place to unwind from
some long driving days and absorb the sleepy pac of Lake life.
The Saturday pottery market is a must as it attracts throngs of
people from surrounding villages haggling over regions famous Kisi
pots. The market can either be accessed by a walk along the Lake
shore or you can hire dugout canoes in Matema.
There are several hikes into the mountains
but it is advised to hire a local guide in the village.
We stay at the Lutheran Centre in the village which has a great
location in the grounds of the historic mission.
