Cultural Activities and Hikes in the Uluguru
Mountains, near Morogoro
Morogoro is an agricultural town and acts as a hub
point for safaris in southern Tanzania.
It is worth stopping off for a couple of nights to break up some
of the driving days, enjoy walking in the Uluguru
Mountains and experience some of the local community lifestyle.
There are several hikes from a few hours to a few
days duration but we would recommend the half day hikes and basing
yourself at Kimango Farmhouse as at present the overnight hikes
are not really geared up for tourism.
Villages that can be visited whilst on the hikes
include Madola, Usolo and Kinole and for the energetic an ascent
of Lupanga peak at 2150 m is a full day hike. Waterfalls, forest
and walks through farming communities provide close interaction
with the Luguru and Maasai villagers, the chance to see primates
and some stunning views.
All trips are escorted by a local guide and benefit
a local community tourism project based in Morogoro. www.chilunga.or.tz
